Electronic procurement service unit of DBM now the first solar-powered govt office

By Bea Montenegro

The Procurement Service - Philippine Government Electronic Procurement System (PS-PhilGEPS) of the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) is now the first government office in the country to be powered by solar energy. Thursday, June 4, they launched their new 51.3 kWp grid system.

"We felt that it is the responsibility of organizations, public or private, to do its share in protecting the environment because it is not only every person's right to have a balanced and healthy environment but also protecting it for future generations," PS-PhilGEPS Executive Director Jose Tomas Syquia said at the grid launch.

The system has an average monthly solar production of 4,645 kWhr and can generate monthly average savings worth PHP 51,210. PS-PhilGEPS can derive at least 20-30% of their energy needs from the newly-installed system, and prevents an estimated 31,000 tons of greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere.

"The use of renewables should become mainstream as far as government energy is concerned," said DBM Secretary Florencio Abad.

Propmech Corporation installed the solar rooftop modules. Propmech Corporation was also the company that installed the solar panels at Manuel L. Quezon University late last year.
